Aftershave vs. Facial Moisturizer
One question I get from many men is: what is the difference between aftershave and facial moisturizers? In most cases they are one in the same.
An aftershave is designed specifically to soothe skin and replenish moisture after shaving. I mean - shaving is a very aggressive action to your skin no matter what products you use. A blade scrapes your skin as it cuts away facial hair; it’s not the most benign activity.
A facial moisturizer deals with replenishing moisture to the skin with or without facial hair. Since its existence does not revolve around calming the skin after shaving, facial moisturizers can host a wealth of ingredients and delivery systems that provide various benefits such as fighting acne, diminishing wrinkles and balancing oil production.
So now the question is, which one do you need to use or do you need to use both?
If shaving isn’t an issue for you, then just use a moisturizer and pick one that tackles your specific concerns and does a little more than just providing hydration. But some of us need a little somethin’- somethin’ to take the edge off right after a shaving session and that is where an aftershave comes in.
If you’re a normal to dry guy, then apply a small amount of your favorite moisturizer on top of your aftershave. If you’re a combination to oily guy, an oil-free aftershave will be enough to use by itself.
Don’t use an alcohol-based aftershave splash. Yes, it is antiseptic, but it is drying and can stir your skin up. Trust me. You don’t want to shock your skin into submission. It may work for a little while, but you will pay for it later.
Days when you don’t shave, you can still use your aftershave or use a treatment moisturizer so you get the best of both worlds. However, if an aftershave is plenty of moisture for you, you don’t need to add a moisturizer.
I am of the school of thought, that less is more so don’t overdo it. If one day you don’t need to use a moisturizer, don’t. It’s okay. But, absolutely use an aftershave or moisturizer immediately following shaving. Your skin will thank you for it by feeling and looking good.
I find that one of the coolest things about taking your skincare seriously is that you aren’t locked-n-loaded into a regimen. Try new things. If something isn’t working for you anymore, try something else. Just do yourself a favor and don’t go crazy. Slowly introduce new products or activities - don’t overwhelm your skin. And know what a product is formulated to do so you know what to expect and can determine if it is working or not working for you.

Great article, very informative. I know a lot of guys that use alcohol or toners after shaving and washing. They are taking out too much moisture and are damaging their skin.

Yes, though aftersave and men's moisturizer are often thought of as the same thing, many toiletry companies will say "No way!". That is, the product intended for use after shaving is far "lighter" in content, and doesn't carry enough actual soothing creme. What liquid product(s) do you carry that can be used instead of your aftersave lotion--especially at night when one is headed for bed?

George,
To answer your question about what other liquid products we carry that you can use at night instead of the post shave hydrators, my answer would have to be Heavyweight Champion - hands down. It is a rich hydrator without leaving your skin greasy. And it contains ingredients that actually help improve your skin's functions and boost the its appearance. You can even use it in the day time after shaving or on those days when you skip shaving (if you do that sort of thing).
I hope t

that helps. Josh

I find that also...using a preparation that is mostly salicylic acid (usually 2%) on the newly shaved area with a light moisturizer or after shave prep works well too.
Nice products Josh. You obviously put a lot of work into research. Thanks for all the effort!
